Little is known about Clifton's early life. Clifton had a passion for Sambo dolls, or at least for selling them.

- Darth Clifton is a direct analogue of Sheev Palpatine/Darth Sidious from the Star Wars film series.
- Unlike Mace Wanda and Akim Ska-Wakir, Darth Clifton's name bares no significant relevance to his Star Wars analogue.
- Clifton's name, however, is that of an identically named character in Ralph Waldo Ellison's novel Invisible Man (1952.) The entirety of Invoice tin Yale is based around a scene in that book where Tod Clifton confronts a police officer.
